Today’s objective was Trust: a great subject to explore as the students were able to ride for the first time.
We started with a circle reviewing the EQ Objectives and Competencies from the previous weeks. Starting today, we divided the students into two groups, one eighth grade group and one seventh grade. As the seventh graders were exploring what trust means to them horseback, the eighth graders were doing the same thing working with the horses on the ground. Both groups did exercises blindfolded. When riding, the students had an adult volunteer with them the whole time, and on the ground, blind folded students led their horse while being led themselves by other students. We reflected on how their experiences trusting each other, their volunteers, the horses and themselves related to the role trust plays in their lives. Interestingly, most of the students had relatively few people that they could trust, did not mention any adults they trusted outside of parents, and quite a few students mentioned having trust in God. Almost all of them were beaming after riding.
